Seat Belts and Crash Helmets

Seat Belts and Crash Helmets

By Mick Farmer.

At the end of last year, I had the privilege to give a talk on defensive driving at an event organised by the Uganda Red Cross. The event was to; one, promote the use of seat belts and crash helmets and; two, to give an award to the best driver of the year. I was encouraged by the turn out and by organisations such as the Uganda Police and UTODA having a major role to play in the event.

As you are all probably aware, the majority of drivers and motorcyclists in Uganda do not wear seat belts and don crash helmets respectively. The question we have to ask ourselves is why is this? And why does this observation apply to Ugandans and expats alike? Read More >>

QUESTION: We have two warn winches one 12,000# and one 6000#. We have had to replace the cable twice in the last 90 days because of misuse. We use the winch for vehicle stabilisation (e.g. vehicle on it's side, upside down, or down a hill) and also to pull out our equipment when it gets stuck. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Read Answer >>

Security report updates

Security Report Updates

The Gaba Road is still an area to be extra alert on when traveling at night. A number of people have not only been held up, but also held hostage for several hours before being released by the side of the road outside of town. Further, there is a trend towards attempting several hits on the same target over a period of months until the carjackers succeed. In other words, if the carjackers fail once they continue to watch the same target for another opportunity.

Also, I am hearing from people that armed robbery incidents outside of Kampala are on the rise - i.e. to the west such as on the road to Ishasha. Thieves are looking for other opportunities - such as rural areas where policing resources may be limited.

Carjacking, generally, world-wide seems to be on the rise. The recently released FBI report points to improved anti-theft devises as the cause. As it becomes more difficult to steal a car without the keys, the criminal is looking for other opportunities. See BBC Report>>
