Driving Courses Designed For African Roads

OnCourse Driving Newsletter - Issue: April 2005

Dear Reader,
Just a short post-Easter newsletter to let you know our web site has been updated with new driving articles. We have put a new tyre poll on our site and are interested to hear what type of tyre you fit on your vehicles. Also, FYI - I have attached our Uganda training schedule for the next few months; these dates are flexible and if you have a group, we will be able to put in additional dates to suit your schedule.

Also, if you have any topics you would like to see covered in Kampala Eye magazine or on our web site, please drop me a line.

Consider The High-Lift Jack

4wd Equipment: Consider The High Lift Jack

A while ago I wrote an article on winches and asked the question as to their viability. In the article, I discussed that unless you were a complete 4wd nutter like myself or working / living in an environment where you are likely to get stuck on a near daily basis then -- pretty much a waste of money.

One piece of equipment that is, in my opinion, invaluable is the high-lift jack. There are various makes including "hi-lift", "jack-all", and "black rat" but they all do much the same thing; only some have a higher safe working load than others. This is important to take into consideration if you are driving a heavy 100 series Landcruiser. The good thing about the jack is, not just it's capability of lifting the vehicle high off the ground, but also to be used as a winch, splitting logs and clamping together timber or other material ... Security Alert

Driving in Kenya

I just came back from Kenya last week - the drive from the border to Nairobi is really bad. We saw over 15 turned semi trailers, trucks, rolled cars, accidents on the round trip. Also, when driving in Kenya, you not only have to be aware of the driving hazards, such as a truck driving towards you in your lane, but be aware of the potential for car-jackings. The security concerns (robbery, carjacking) have escalated to the point where people are asking not if but when they will be targeted. The crime is also often violent. To put it in context, I saw one banner in a Nairobi suburb, put up by the Police saying - if you get a flat tyre ride the rim, save lives not tyres. Will try to get a photo of it next time and post it.

The attackers are very daring - attacks can occur any time of day (and obviously at night) and can include busy roads with constant traffic. No place or time is safe. I hope the new anti-crime initiative by the police will work. Security information and updates of the situation are here on the FCO web site.
