Incident: Car-jacking

  • Date & Time: October 10, 2002 - 20:00-24:00
  • Location: Ntinda-Kinawataka
  • Vehicle: Suzuki Vitara
  • No. of Thieves: +4
  • If armed, with what: AK47
  • Type of vehicle(s) used: 1 saloon car /Toyota
  • Type of Hit & Description: Overtaking Hit. While driving, the target's vehicle was blocked by a saloon car (Toyota). He was pulled out and put in the saloon car and held hostage from 20:30 hrs. He was released at 01:30hrs and dropped at Banda a long Jinja road. The group that went with the vehicle later called those holding the hostage and to say they are now safe and that the hostage free can be let free. NOTE: These vehicles are being taken through Tanzania to Zambia and later on driven to Lubumbashi.

  • Type of vehicle(s) used: 1 saloon car - Toyota Mark II
  • Type of Hit & Description: Overtaking Hit. Of late Kampala has been experiencing Carjacking at gun point. The Carjackers have been using a Toyota Mark II to block their victims. The driver is then put into the Carjackers vehicle and held hostage for up to four hours, to give the other party ample time to get out of the country. This particular vehicle was recovered in Kenya by Tracker 10 km from Kenya TZ border after a long chase and a shoot out with the Carjackers.

  • Location: Approaching Masaka From Mbarara
  • Vehicle: Land Rover 109 Station Wagon
  • No. of Thieves: 3-4
  • If armed, with what: Pistol
  • Type of vehicle(s) used: 1 saloon car - Toyota Corolla
  • Type of Hit & Description: Overtaking Hit. Going up hill at about 60-70 kph. Driver noticed a vehicle pull along side. The passenger in the overtaking vehicle was aiming a fire arm at them. The driver of the Land Rover hit the brakes hard and the vehicle stalled. It wasn't clear if the shots were fired before or after the braking. At least five rounds hit the land rover. After the vehicle stalled the occupants managed to get out and flee the site. They weren't badly injured it seems that one was hit by flying metal (not bullet). They returned to the vehicle to find it ransacked. They the drove into Masaka to receive medical attention and report the incident to the local Police.

  • Location:Hannington Road
  • Vehicle: Toyota Saloon Car
  • No. of Thieves: 3-4
  • If armed, with what: Machine Guns x3
  • Type of vehicle(s) used: 1 saloon
  • Type of Hit & Description: Overtake Hit. Overtaken and blocked at the speed bumps. 3 thugs surrounded the vehicle and demanded cash and personal effects. Items were taken and then they left. No physical injuries.

  • Location: Kisasi
  • Vehicle: Hilux Double Cabin - Toyota
  • No. of Thieves: 4
  • If armed, with what: Handgun & Machine Guns
  • Type of vehicle(s) used:1 saloon
  • Type of Hit & Description: Overtake Hit. Road was dusty so attempted to avoid allowing the vehicle behind to overtake. After an amount of time where the other vehicle was constantly attempting to overtake - they were let through. Victims were taken with the thieves and held for 3 hours at an unknown location. After which time they were taken to the outskirts of Kampala and left.

Incident: Attempted Car-Jacking

  • Date & Time: March 21, 2002 - 21:00
  • Location: Dr. Gibbons Road, Makindye
  • Vehicle: Landrover Defender
  • No. of Thieves: 3-4
  • If armed, with what: Handguns
  • Type of vehicle(s) used:2 saloon /estate
  • Type of Hit & Description: Box-in. Following slow moving estate up Dr gibbons rd. Kept distance. Vehicle went round corner. I stopped went to reverse. Light not working. Saw slow moving vehicle reversing back. Went past vehicle and around corner. Another vehicle parked in quarry area. Shots x2 fired from static vehicle. Foot down and drive past.

  • Location: Kira Road
  • Vehicle: Toyota Saloon Car
  • No. of Thieves: 3
  • If armed, with what: Machine Guns x1
  • Type of vehicle(s) used: 2 saloon cars
  • Type of Hit & Description: Box-in. One vehicle was moving slow in front and another vehicle came up along side of the victim's car waving guns demanding he pull over. He was told to get out and hand over his personal effects. After robbing him, they then drove off with his vehicle.
